Scientifically engineered “superfoods”
Eating Liberally is now interviewing me on a regular basis in a post called “Let’s Ask Marion.” Today’s question is about foods created by technologists to introduce some health benefit–what I like to call “techno-foods.” It is timely because today’s New York Times has a report by Andrew Martin of his visit to the recent convention of the Institute of Food Technology. Are these foods really designed to make you healthy? Or are they about the financial health of their makers?

This will be the closing keynote to the 7th Biennial Childhood Obesity Conference, sponsored by the California Department of Public Health, UC Berkeley, the Atkins Center for Weight and Health, the California Department of Education, Kaiser Permanente, and the California Endowment.
It’s at about 11:30 a.m. in the Long Beach Convention Center.

I think the winning quote from the NYT article is:
“The whole paradigm in our society has been based on prescription pharmaceuticals,” Mr. Flowerman said. Now, he said, “food can also be available for enhancing health and wellness.”
Mr. Flowerman doesn’t seem to know that some of us already look to food as a source for health and wellness – but that’s by eating healthy foods – not by spiking our food with dubious supplements…
