GAO says GM foods need better regulation

In a new report, the watchdog Government Accountability Office reviews six incidents in which genetically modified foods got into places they weren’t supposed to be.  GAO concludes that when it comes to GM foods, the USDA, FDA, and EPA need to do a better job of communicating, coordinating, and acting more transparently.  Will this report do any good?  Let’s hope.

Whomever takes over the USDA and the FDA should pointedly be asked if they support labeling of genetically engineered plants and seeds and whether they support legislation that would ban terminator seed technology (GE plants that produce sterile seeds so that they can not used again to produce future crops). That should be a litmus test.

Seedless watermelons are a form of terminator technology, ya know. Wanna ban them too?

In all seriousness, I have heard from high and low that the three-agency regulation of GE crops has got to change and regulation should be done by a single agency. (For that matter, USDA and FDA functions overlap in bizarre ways that have nothing to do with GE crops.)
