Clever move: Peanut Corp goes bankrupt

The peanut butter story gets more sordid by the minute.  Peanut Corporation of America, owner of the Georgia plant that shipped peanut butter laced with Salmonella, has gone belly up.    By filing for bankruptcy, it gets to avoid claims and class action suits related to the illnesses and deaths caused by the tainted peanut butter.  Check out what Consumers Union has to say about this ploy.

It’s interesting that you are one of the only people I’ve heard talking about this aspect, especially since my first assumption was that they were trying to avoid the lawsuits which were bound to come out of all of these revelations

Sordid, sly, flagrantly thumbing their nose at any responsibility for the quality or safety of their product. AND, nothing to keep them from organizing a different legal entity corporation to open up another peanut plant under a different company name, and operate with the same criminal disregard for the consumer. These people seem to have no moral or ethical foundation.

Great post Marion. Did you see that Marler’s fixing up his cases to name Stewart Parnell as the defendant instead of PCA? So the bankruptcy thing? Maybe not such a brilliant strategy after all. http://www.lavidalocavore.org/showDiary.do?diaryId=1007
