Busy weekend: the Obama’s First Puppy and Fixing the FDA

In case you were wondering about my thoughts on what the Obamas should be feeding their new First Puppy, I did an interview with Obama Foodorama on that very topic: “The Obamas get a new puppy and policy issues get unleashed.”

And for my latest column in the San Francisco Chronicle, “Full plate for Obama’s new FDA administrator,” I deal with the question of what the new FDA Commissioner, Dr. Margaret Hamburg, needs to do to fix the agency’s problems. She will need all the support we can give her.

Marion, I think you might love this. Live from the white house: healthy cooking for kids. http://www.whitehouse.gov/live2/

I read your puppy post! And I’ve heard before that dogs can do well on raw vegan diets. But what about cats? I have 3!

Marion:

I’m a little surprised that you didn’t take the opportunity to suggest a diet that is not only sustainable and ethical, but goes to the root of Man’s earliest relationship with dogs. The Man/Dog symbiosis began thousands of years ago with a simple “contract”: Dog’s ate Man’s waste (bones, scraps, etc.) and in return provided protection, warning, loyalty, etc.

A place like the White House certainly produces phenomenal food waste after feeding so may staff, visitors, dignitaries, etc. Tons of meat, vegetables, fruit, are discarded. A perfect diet for a dog. The very idea of buying dog food while at the same time producing so much waste is unconscionable.
