Cereal makers object to anti-salt ads in U.K.
The British Food Standards Agency is about to take on the high amount of salt in processed foods. Leading cereal makers are not happy about this. They don’t the think the campaign is appropriate because cereals account for “only” 5% of the salt in British diets. Salt reduction is the new frontier of concerns about health. Expect to hear lots more about how much of it is in processed and restaurant foods this year.

Their response is funny…wonder what they would say if the FSA targeted sugar instead of sodium?
Someone once chastened me for sprinkling a bit of salt on my self-prepared (very low salt) food. This person’s diet consists almost entirely of processed meats and very cheap (and salty) prepared frozen dinners! Who’s getting the overdose of salt? I gave him a lectured (and a label reading lesson) he won’t soon forget!
I put a pinch of salt in when I cook oatmeal, but I do mean a pinch. I try not to exceed 1/2 tsp./day. Boxed cereal is just another one of those “foods” that advertisers got us in the habit of using. It takes five minutes to prepare good old oatmeal. Add a few raisins for sweetness, some milk or yogurt and some banana or other fruit, and you have a great, healthy and WARM meal. If people can’t spare five minutes for a decent breakfast, they seriously need to examine their lives.

My cereal has no salt or sugar and tastes great. It is the inedible salt-and-sugar loaded crap that would essentially be colored cardboard (yes, I’m talkin’ to you froot loops) without the added salt, sugar, flashy packaging and advertizing that will take a big sales hit without the worlds greatest flavour enhancer, aka salt.
What’s so amazing is that if you don’t eat processed foods you don’t need to worry about salt at all. They just use it to cover up the lack of flavor. Yuck!
I really love Kashi cereal. Its very low on sodium and sugar (real sugar) and still tastes great! They have so many different varieties to choose from! The cereal has real nutrition, toasty good taste and nothing artificial! I recommend trying it!
