I am feeling optimistic that we will make significant improvements in school meals in the child nutrition reauthorization this year and early next year. Lots is happening behind the scenes to get the bill ready. Also, there will be big news on Tuesday about next steps for schools meals, when IOM releases its recommendations for new nutrition standards for school lunch and breakfast.

I agree that parents need to "show their kids the light" by eating well. But what about when a toxic school food environment undermines a parent's good intentions?

As educators schools have a responsibility to educate and provide children with healthy foods to eat. Parents should also "show their kids the light" when it comes to eating well. After all it would benefit us all to be healthier as individuals.
