After being hired by a client or appointed by the court, a criminal lawyer's first duty is to meet with the client and hear the client's side of the story about the crime. The attorney will represent the client until or unless the client admits guilt or, in the case of privately hired attorneys, dismisses the criminal lawyer. The attorney will continue to represent the client until the criminal trial is concluded.

No research showing how that product offers the benefits (not just a nutrient the product it contains) should mean no health benefit claim allowed.

no evidence = no claim
It is easy math, FDA.

Great column, Marion!

Now, who is going to take on the "supports" claims on vitamin bottles? The "support" claim is about as meaningless as it gets--the FDA should never have caved to pressure from the unscientific health food community. Science must trump popular demand when it comes to public health.

I saw an elderly lady at Walgreen's looking at a bottle of plain old Vit A which said "supports eye health". She seemed confused so I asked if I could help her. She said she had cataract surgery and was having some problems and wanted to know if I thought this product would help! I told her as sweetly as I could muster to keep her money and call her doctor right away. It took some time to convince her it was okay to call the doc and that these pills would not fix her problem.

It's not just the corporations that peddle such nonsense, but all the people who own stock in these companies as well. The reason they keep trying to sell more junk is to satisfy shareholders. The greed is totally out of control and there is plenty of blame to go around.

im startin 2 b lieve that people r that stupid. they look @ all the health claims made by a junk food due 2 all the added nutrients & decide that now its healthy. may b they kno its not healthy but the added vit & min & antiox help them 2 justify eatin it or feedin it 2 their kids. may b they dont want the real answer. so they r either stupid or tri n 2 fool themselves. they wud b wise 2 focus on the vehicle deliverin all these nutrients-soda,candy disguised as cereal, salty fatty processed foods etc etc all with added nutrients. bluntly put, whipped cream & a cherry on a hot steamin dog turd does not make it a sundae !

Frankly, given their utter lack of taste, I have never understood why anyone would eat Rice Krispies, with or without a health claim of some kind. That is, of course, unless the cereal is in homemade Rice Crispy treats. In fact, I wonder what percentage of this cereal is bought solely for purposes of making treats?

I have a health claim:

"This food contains calories. Calories have been shown in studies to fend off hunger and malnourishment, and provide energy for human bodies."
