I guess with huge conglomerate governing bodies like the EU, and the whole 4 year term thing, that Industry really is the new Government. The public gets to decide which elected officers sign off on the Industry's demands.

Wow. That's negative me. I'm usually much more optimistic about the power of the consumer and state against industry.

Vote with your dollars everyone.

Reading this infuriates me. I'm so aggravated with the food companies in the USA that I make every effort that I can to buy darn near everything in my fridge from the Farmer's Market, even if I spend a little more to do so. A little knowledge goes a long way.

Ah, let the food industry leaders control things. That worked well with the banking/investment industries.

Dear Marion,

Please please please come to the UK and teach people how to lobby. This is so upsetting. Today the FSA has been scrapped also.

Can you come soon?

Oh, Marion, this is so discouraging. I do not have another 30 years to spare for such nonsense! My grandchildren are getting fatter and their lives are insidiously influenced by the peddling of all these "must have", but useless "products".

So much for the "coalition" government". I guess the Lib Dems had their reasons for caving on this. I don't really know how a coalition govt comes to agreements, but this is not encouraging. I think we can, sadly, assume that it will turn out much the same here at home.

I'm going over to Michelle Simon's blog now--just a glutton for punishment, I guess. One reason this topic makes me so sad is that I lived in England for a couple of years in the early 80's, and I honestly only ever saw about two really obese people. That changed so quickly with a couple of things: Daytime TV programming was just taking off at that time--more ads; and, fast food chains were just moving in. There was just one McDonald's in London (I think--not very many at any rate) when I was there. Now days, I believe they are as obese as we are and they know why (as do we), but these powerful corporations are now in such control, that I'm not sure they can be stopped. And don't forget what is becoming my mantra: corporations are only as greedy as their shareholders allow them to be. It just makes me sick when someone tells me one minute how much he cares about children and public health, and the next minute tells me how well he's done with McDonald's stock this year, in spite of the economic situation.
