Dear Dr. Nestle,

I love the articles you put up! I found “US News rates the diets” and “Peevish about protein” especially interesting. Ellen Sarver Dolgen (aka “E”), author of Shmirshky: the pursuit of hormone happiness, loves your site, too. Healthy eating becomes an even bigger issue for women going through perimenopause & menopause (PM&M). It is clear that you share a common mission and passion for educating women of all ages about health so they can make informed decisions regarding their well being.

E has been speaking about perimenopause and menopause throughout the country as well as appearing on local and national major media outlets, including Rachael Ray, The Doctors, Doctor Radio, NPR, Stars Sirius Radio, Oprah Radio, Good Day New York, Fox News, NBC and many more. She is also a regular contributor for the Huffington Post’s latest site, Huff/Post 50.

Shmirshky: the pursuit of hormone happiness offers crucial information, blood test descriptions, a detailed breakdown of symptoms, a Menopause Symptoms Chart to help women track patterns, helpful guides and heartfelt stories in easy-to-understand layperson speak. On shmirshky.com we keep women informed on the latest info on PM&M through blogs, guest blogs and media links. I would love to send you a copy of the book and discuss a promotional collaboration if you email me!

Thank you again for your great articles on diet and nutrition!

Sincerely,

Katherine Wehde

Did you follow NPR’s MarketPlace? Today there was a segment on Yum! Brands, the owners of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. I did not find it surprising that the company is doing so well, with a 13% increase this year. But to hear that one needs a reservation in China to get a seat in a Pizza Hut?

If you didn’t catch MarketPlace last week, here’s a commentary by Mark Bittman on the need to control what types of food we market to children.

Hello, I love your blog and books! I just wanted to pass along this article http://www.progressivegrocer.com/top-stories/headlines/center-store/id34494/general-mills-pilots-hispanic-online-sampling-program/
which I think is an insiduous way for General Mills to target the demographic with the fastest growing obesity rates with sugar-laden unhealthy choices like Dulce de Leche Cheerios. Isn’t this a form of institutional racism?

@Christine Montes: For information about issues and documents referred to on my site, it’s always a good idea to try a search using your own terms or those in the cloud. I refer to the Lancet obesity articles at http://www.foodpolitics.com/2011/08/the-lancets-series-on-obesity/. Enjoy!

As an MPH student I was inspired by your “Looking Ahead” post of 12/31. In it you mention that : “The Lancet recently summarized the state of the science on successful obesity interventions…”
Can you please post a link to the original Lancet article?
Thank you- great posting

@LocalJudi: Linking to independent bookstores is a terrific idea. I have now done so on the main book page and on all of the individual pages for the books that are still in print. Thanks for the suggestion!

Dr. Nestle —

I’m looking forward to your next book and e-mailed my favorite local bookstore, Boswell’s Books in Milwaukee, to make sure they have a copy for me when it’s published. So that more of us who like to patronize local bookstores are encouraged to buy the book, might you please consider linking to IndieBound on your website?

Thanks for your great work!

@Kristin–I’m not sure what you mean by “food regulatory science,” so may be missing your point. Food regulation involves laws, so law school might be worth considering. Perhaps readers have other suggestions?

Dr. Nestle,

I recently graduated with a degree in Botany. I have been reading your blog for a couple of years now. I’m very interested in food regulatory science, but I have no idea where to get started. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you,
Kristen

Dear Dr. Nestle,

Thank you for your great website and the work you do. We would like you to know about Humane Week. We are asking participants to pledge to give no money to factory farms for one week, and instead support small, humane family farms.

We are expanding quickly, with our first campaign in New York from January 16-22. Our mission is to give out information about what local restaurants and supermarkets source animal products from humane farms.

It is a very difficult and confusing topic to recommend some labels or farms over others as being “humane.” We would love to consult with you. Can we invite you to a meeting? How can we contact you.

The pledge is on our website at: http://www.HumaneWeek.org.

Thank you,

Nate

Thank you so much for the feedback on the arsenic juice. This was hair splitting so for now I decided to cut the apple juice (and juice box) from my daughter’s diet for now… very tough decision for consumers, but surprisingly most of my mom-friends don’t seem to concerned (which actually concerns me a lot)

Hi Dr. Nestle,

Did you see this report (or the underlying story)?

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2011/12/23/144181112/feds-trash-old-proposal-on-animal-antibiotics#more
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration … decided this week to throw … [a proposal to restrict the routine use of antibiotics in agricultural animals] it in the garbage.”

Dr. Nestle,

Thank you for your blog and your clear voice and vision.

Many of us in the fair trade movement would be curious to hear your thoughts on the recent decision by Fair Trade USA to split from the international labeling organization Fair Trade International, and especially their decision to pilot a new set of standards that would certify large plantations as “Fair Trade”.

For a quick reference, here’s a link to FTUSA’s website, and another to a more critical perspective from a leading producer organization in Latin America:

Many thanks,

I have been reading about food companies and their reactions to guidelines. Here is a 3 minute YouTube music video which has the “Eat More Food Company” as the villain – until the end when they become the Eat Some Food Company and begin to help worldwide hunger. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb8vnEXTOHQ

The music was created and performed by bay area high school kids. People say it’s a catchy tune, funny, and has a great health message.

It was meant to promote a new iPhone app (FatApp – count the calories you don’t eat) but you can skip that part (the final credits – 10 seconds).

Maybe you can use this?

Marion,
I enjoyed your blogs about Let’s Move this week, I believe your input will help push for more change on the nutrition side, which is critical for American youth – thanks for your insightful & fearless writing, it inspires me to speak my mind more!
I am a Nutritionist that works with kids and schools to teach and encourage healthy nutrition, stress management, and promote exercise. I find that adults write off kids – they do not give them enough credit. If you make it fun & interesting, and connect to their motivation, kids can and will make healthier choices. But many people just give up before trying. I would love to share my ideas and approach with Let’s Move and Michelle Obama – because it is working! I firmly believe that healthy food can be fun food – just takes a little creativity sometimes!
I believe that change is possible – and discussions like the one you started are an essential part of the process. Change is uncomfortable!
Thanks,
Sara Vance, CN

@Edwin: you can subscribe to the blog through the RSS feed or Twitter. Thanks for asking.

@Jan Henderson: I did and will comment on it later this week. Thanks.

@FG_2009: The arsenic-in-juice story is also worth a post and I will get to it sometime soon. Thanks!

Hi marion I love reading your blog. I want to know if you have an email newsletter of updates

Did you see this article in the Guardian: Alarm as corporate giants target developing countries http://bit.ly/v5biwm
Multinational food companies find new ways to sell junk food to the global poor. “The companies say they are finding innovative ways to give isolated people the kind of choices the rich have enjoyed for years.” South African minister of health laments: “Health budgets will break because of the cost of amputations, artificial limbs, wheelchairs and cardiac surgery.”

@Heidi Huck: nothing could be easier. Every community has groups working on anti-hunger issues and they should be easy to find with a Google search for “anti-hunger organizations,” adding the name of your community to the search line. See what pops up. And do read Janet Poppendieck’s book, “Sweet Charity,” if you haven’t already done so.

I am hoping to volunteer for an organization supporting food security, fighting hunger. Do you have any recommendations?

I represent Plaintiffs in a lawsuit against McDonald’s and you were quoted in the NY Times today and then I found this site. I need to discuss with a consultant about McDonald’s advertising being directed to attract children. My FAS Navajo young man who is developmentally disabled was kidnapped from the Farmington NM restaurant by 3 employees and tortured and having a swastika branded on his tiny arm. happened in 2010. my expert disclosure deadline set by the court is 1.20.12. Could you assist or suggest someone? Thank you. 505-842-1905

What is your take on the new consumer report testing on juice and the arsenic content in pretty much all of the juices tested?

Hi Dr. Nestle,

I was very surprised to see a commercial the other day inviting me to a website called http://www.fooddialogues.com to “learn more about where my food comes from.” Turns out, it’s sponsored by the US Farmers & Ranchers Alliance. What are your thoughts on this type of appeal to the public? I’d grown used to the high fructose corn syrup commercials, but this is certainly a new development. I’d love to hear what you think about the commercial and the website.

Thanks,
Ashley
