Food art: Polar Bear Hamburger

The Johnson Museum of Art on the Cornell University campus is displaying this remarkable, 8-foot wide, soft sculpture in its lobby.

The artist is Vincent J.F. Huang.  He calls it “Polar Bear Hamburger, 2014.”

Mr. Huang says his work is devoted to “creating statements that will raise awareness around various political and environmental issues.”

It works for me.

Yeah, I guess the farm students at Cornell whose parents are trying to raise money for next round of land taxes to keep their livestock farms will look at this and wonder. Do urban food movement leaders have any specific numbers on how many livestock farms should be removed from the land?

As we continue to lose farms to subdivision across the northeast , we are losing biodiversity , open grasslands and grass associated species. So much easier though to point to the polar bear while ignoring destruction of habitats in our own part of country. The lack of knowledge by urban foodies about own region is appalling.
