Fed Up: America’s Killer diet

In case you missed CNN’s weekend investigative report on America’s obesity epidemic, you get another chance online. I was interviewed for it and appear for 5 seconds right at the beginning. I’m always suspicious of programs that show lots of pictures of overweight people (with heads discreetly cut off); they usually miss key points as well as being insensitive. I’m curious to know what you thought of it. CNN went to a lot of trouble to do all those interviews and all that filming. What did you learn from it? Do tell.

Yes, I did watch that – I found it pretty insightful…with some useful practical take home messages for anyone watching – topped with fun “experiements” to validate key points. I have added it to my blog!

After reading your books and The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan and Fatland by Greg Critser, plus many articles in magazines and online, I didn’t really find anything new in this report. However, I was encouraged to see that this kind of information has made it to mainstream news. I sense a growing groundswell to do something about our national diet. I hope I’m right.

Hi! I would love to watch the episode, but unfortunately the link doesn’t lead to an online video of the episode?

I watched the CNN America’s Killer diet while I was exercising. The report stated what I have said for over 5 years. You are what you eat. You put junk in your body, your body will reward you, with junk. The junk is in the form of cancer, heart disease, demential, arthritis and many other diseases. It’s time America, took the time to monitor what our childen eat, just like we monitor what they watch on t.v.

I watched the show, and I thought it was nothing new to me. I work at the VA hospital, and about 2/3 would rather eat unhealthy then healthy. The foods are fried, and people are allowed to have a smoking room in the building and within 50′ of the building here. Given the choice to eat a salad and mashed potatoes slathered with gravy – people will take the mashed potatoes. For myself, I would love to have spinach in my salads, even to eat healthy, but I go to a store near by and buy a great salad. I am not a big fan of “Big Brother” telling me what to eat, and not to eat. If you want to eat unhealthy that is your choice. We are given so much information about what to do and not to do that it is really up to the individual. Freedome of choice.
