U.S. Government Food Posters on exhibit! Online!
I love food posters. Thanks to Food Safety News for the heads up about the National Library of Medicine’s exhibit of marvelous food posters from World Wars I and II. Many of these can be seen online at the Smithsonian’s site. The exhibit was curated by Cory Bernat, who comments on it and also has a collection posted on the web (I’ve seen it and it’s wonderfully downloadable, but seems to have a bandwidth problem at the moment). Enjoy!

I have a call in to the Department of Agriculture Library to see if reproductions will go up for sale. I spoke to a representative, who said a tweet went out that has generated some inquiries – and they are trying to get an answer. I will post here if I receive a return call.
Here’s some great examples of food posters issued during wartime:

Just got a call back. No reproductions yet, but they are getting calls with requests so it may be an available purchase in the future.
[...] 27 07 2010 Like Marion Nestle, I love food posters (although my tastes tend to lean towards WWI). She posts links to two wonderful online collections here and here. These are my favorites as I hadn’t seen [...]
High resolution versions of many of these posters can be downloaded for free from the US Library of Congress photo collection:

Many thanks for your interest in the poster exhibit. I am happy to report that my little site is back up, now with unlimited bandwidth!
Kind regards,
Cory Bernat

Thanks for spreading the word about this compelling exhibit of War-era food posters, but please note that the exhibit is actually being put on by the National Agricultural Library. In fact, many of the posters from the exhibit are unique to NAL.
