We were very excited to learn that you are speaking in Columbus on April 16. As it happens, We are hosting a student led conference for early college high school students from across the country focused on the question “What Makes For a Healthy Community?” We would have been thrilled to have our students hear your presentation, however they will be at the culminating event of the conference at that time. I attach a press release in the hopes that we might be able to connect in some way when you are in town. Thanks. Debbie Addison.
Teens examine “What Makes for a Healthy Community” at April conference in Columbus
April 13th-17th, 2013, Columbus, Ohio
Conference information:
The Charles School at Ohio Dominican University (TCS@ODU), a member of Middle College National Consortium (MCNC) since 2008, will host the MCNC Annual Student Leadership Initiative in Columbus April 13th through 17th, 2013. The conference is the culmination of a year-long program to develop and promote student voices within the community. Each year, over 200 Early College High School students from 34 schools in 16 states participate in this national conference along with teachers and advisors from their schools.
Students spend eight months preparing for the conference. They focus on a critical need or issue arising from environmental or social justice concerns that we all share in our communities. They use social media to discuss and build programs that educate and engage their peers and communities in focused social advocacy.
The critical issue for this year’s study and conference is “What Makes for a Healthy Community?”
Students will concentrate on four Pillars of Focus in preparation for the conference: Arts and Recreation, Education, Health and Medicine, and Social Service. During their stay In Columbus, students will examine and highlight experiences or conditions in a community that engender healthy, productive lives for children and teens. Students will do community service in the focus areas of the conference, working with local organizations that will join us as experiential partner sites on April 15th and 16th. The culminating event of the conference, on April 16th at COSI, is a Community Celebration. It will include the world premiere of a film based on months of study, inquiry, analysis, video conferencing and recommendations by students from around the country. As a result of student leadership, engagement, and dissemination of the work, the impact of their inquiry could serve to advance the health of communities throughout the nation.
Generous support for the 2013 conference in Columbus has been provided by
Crane Group, Limited Brands, and The Columbus Foundation.
Conference Presenters:
With support from MCNC, The Charles School at Ohio Dominican University has designed a conference that showcases Columbus, its world class attractions and community resources. Led by a team of students and faculty from TCS@ODU, the conference in Columbus offers a robust and unique blend of learning, exploration and community service for participants. With the support and assistance of conference sponsors, media partners, experiential sites, and in kind donors, student leaders from around the country will have a memorable conference experience in Columbus.
MCNC is composed of Early College High Schools committed to preparing students in underserved communities who are primarily low income, minority and first in their families to pursue higher education, by giving them rigorous coursework that will lead to college credits while students are still enrolled in high school. Students enrolled in these schools take college classes as early as ninth grade and follow a plan designed to help them earn up to 60 college credits (an Associates Degree) upon graduation from high school, entirely tuition free.
