FoodNavigator on higher food prices

FoodNavigator-USA has collected several of its articles on higher food prices.  These, as I’ve mentioned previously, are due to a big range of causes: natural disasters (witness radioactivity in foods from Japan, crop failures, commodity trading, growing corn for biofuels, the declining value of the U.S. dollar, and how about just plain greed?

FoodNavigator is an industry newsletter, so its articles focus on the effects of higher prices on the food industry.

    Pop authors like Michael Pollan (and Marion Nestle) have asserted “food is too cheap”. There are tedious convoluted arguments set forth to pitch that assertion.

    Food inflation works a hardship on common folks, course, but why the concern from elitists now that food prices are rising again?

    “Food is too cheap.” Well, that’s being fixed. So we will live happily ever after, right? The goodness should break over us in a wave any time now. Or was the original theory flawed?

    For the record, Doc Mudd has always been in favor of affordable, even cheap food in abundance.

    I think the idea was junk food is too cheap, while wholesome and nutritious options are often more expensive. Let’s concern ourselves with facts and accurate depictions.

    It may be possible to rhetorically reverse-engineer the original intent and “idea” of what was asserted, Mike. We would, however, have to depart from “facts and accurate depictions” of what actually was lectured and written.

    I wouldn’t expect anything different under the circumstances (cynic that I am).

    All the same, abundant affordable food is already beginning to look pretty good alongside the looming alternative. So then, a popular elitist hypothesis tested and likely rejected as incorrect, naive and impractical.
